This gallery is named in honor of one of the first book of photographs published, "The Pencil of Nature" by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1844.
A case can be made for his friend and neighbor Anna Atkins as the pioneer in this field, as she published her initial book of photograms in 1843 and it is considered the first book to be illustrated with photographic images. However a gallery entitled, "Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions" would be misleading. None the less I have included a few digital interpretations of the cyanotype process in the mix here.
